Need to Start Packing

I'm about to head home for a while. My plans for Texas this summer have overlapped with an upcoming trip to Massachusetts and conferences in Houston, Texas, and San Antonio, Texas, so I'm all over the place for the next six months.

Now, I'm wrapping up my historical fiction set of short stories about the Outer Banks, North Carolina, so I can carry a copy with me to my Reader near Fort Worth. I can email it, but it's very satisfying to carry a copy with me and personally hand it over.

Here's my rough draft "short" for today about the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. This is historical fiction, so it's based on real characters, real locations, and real events.

Turtle Day!

If you don't know, my son has a turtle. He lives in the living room just down the stairs from my office. (pics under the Read More)

You may think, oh, so sweet, and that's true, but it's more. Bob (the turtle's name) is a yellow-belly slider native to the East Coast. We got him at a half-dollar size when he wandered onto our driveway as a hatchling. That was not quite 2 years ago. He's now eight inches! (not counting his massive head and feet!) He can eat an entire lettuce leaf in less than a minute, and HE EATS ALL THE TIME!

Not Spring Yet

It's not spring, but I caved and did my first spring thing today.

I mowed the yard.

I know, I know. It had to be done, but I vowed I wasn't starting my lawnmower in February. So, I passed up all the beautiful days this week, and I mowed under a chilly and cloudy sky.

At least I got it done before the rain set in (and did it rain!). My wife even noticed when she came home.

2 Pieces of Exciting News!

The past week and a half have been very exciting, and I want to share it with you.

My wife and I spent Valentine's weekend on the Outer Banks, and since I've been back, I'm eleven chapters into my new historical fiction book about events on the Carolina coast and the Outer Banks. I'll be sharing more later.

Outer Banks Done!

Several good things from my trip to North Carolina's Outer Banks: I collected substantial information for my new novel about lighthouses of the Banks and the battles that have incurred shipwreck after shipwreck over the centuries. Also, as importantly, we made contact with the Jennette family who have generations of lighthouse keepers in their blood. They operated the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse for generations and the family still lives in the area. My wife was discussing the reason for our trip with our hotel desk staff only to find she is a descendant of Unaka Jennette, one of the most prominent of those who lived at and maintained the Cape Hatteras Light, and she invited us to contact her mother, whom, she assured us, would be thrilled to chat about her experiences.
